About Manang
Manang is the biggest village ,situated at an altitude of 3540 meter in the Trans Himalayan region of Nepal. The district got its name from this village MANANG. It is also a major village in the Nyeshyang valley(upper manang)and the most famous place in the Round Annapurna trek( Around Annapurna).
"Gurung" and "Ghale", popularly known as "MANANGIS", with minority of "Lamas’(who came from Tibet, Dolpo and Mustang) are the inhabitants of Manang. There are also few people belonging to the occupational casts. The economy of the village is primarily agriculture, animal husbandry, seasonal business in India and big cities of Nepal and mostly tourism.
The annapurna circuit is one of the most popular trekking routes of the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. Manang (3540m) is half way round the circuit; can be reached in about 4-6 days from the nearest road.
Manang is a beautiful village just below the Thorong la pass situated within the Annapurna conservation area. Thorong La Pass (5,416m) is one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Yak roam the valley sides surrounded by stunning 6000 to 8000m peaks, and the area also contains high concentrations of endangered species such as snow leopard and blue sheep. The area is a botanist's paradise with rare flowers and herbs in abundance. Just above the valley The world's highest situated lake(5000m), Tilicho lake, is just above the manang valley.
Due to it's proximity to some of the highest mountains in the world, manang has been an essential base for trekkers and mountaineers exploring this area. For those interested in local culture, there are many monasteries in the area open to visitors. The famous Tibetan saint Milerepa meditated nearby-the walkup to his cave on the side of Annapurna 3 takes only half a day.
